Self-signed SSL certificates are allowed in Friendika - even though you will get browser warnings trying to navigate to the site. This is mostly to encrypt browser traffic - as critical Friendika site-to-site communications and message passing are already encrypted.
There is always a risk of man-in-the-middle exploits of self signed encrypted traffic, but we feel that the use of any encryption is better than none - and it takes a bit more work to inject a host in the middle of an encrypted conversation than it does to monitor an un-encrypted one.
